The Poush Purnima is a social festival related to agriculture, and the anecdote of Brat or Oshapuja is not associated with it. After the first ripe paddy is celebrated in Nuankhai in Odisha, the full moon of the month of Poush is celebrated as a mass festival in the western part of Odisha after the harvest. Villages in western Odisha are crowded with dances and songs all night long. Abal old age partners in such joyous rejoicing. This is the last day of agriculture for farmers, which is celebrated after the harvest. Five or six days before the full moon, the boys would gather in groups, knock on doors, sing songs to the beat of the word, and collect donations. The song is often chanted. A public banquet is held at Chher Chhera Chanda. On this day, the moneylenders or the big farmers send the auditor to the house of their accountant or the banker. The auditorium has some money, new clothes, rice, pulses and some vegetables. There is also a social trend in employing new agricultural laborers. This is the end of the archery procession in Bargarh.

In the past, during the reign of kings, this was the day when kings were imprisoned. The king and the people were all subdued. Our village still has a new adoption law. In many places, gods are also adorned with gold. It is said that tying Hindu culture to unity is the acceptance of the whole. On this day, various delicacies: Manda, Kakra, Laddu and Mua are offered to the gods and the dedicated offerings are distributed to all. On this day, the national anthem of Utkal is also suitable for Telangana. The Bajabals go door-to-door, captivating the sea with sweet sounds. The housewives listen to their music and give them less and less grain. Everyone, regardless of race or creed, is involved in the festival.

On the full moon day of Poush, Ramachandra was crowned after fourteen years of exile and returned to Ayodhya before taking over the kingdom. Taking this as a memorial, the Thakurs are ordained in the temples on this day every year. On this day, the anointing of the living beings takes place. The scripture mentions this festival: “Pounamyang Rukmini Pateh for Poush Masi Site.

On this full moon day, in the daily worship of Shri Jagannath, Thakur is adorned with new garments, ornaments and fragrant flowers and taken to the Yatra Mandapa. There, in the rituals of Barun Puja, Swastibachan, Mangalaropana, Yajnopavita-Samarpan, Home, Aarti, etc., after the BJ-Pratima and Khadag Puja, the Yajnopavita is first offered to Shri Jagannath and later to the Raja in the Yatra Mandapa as usual. Shri Jagannath’s anointing is celebrated in the temple as the anointing of the king. It is believed that during this anointing, the visitor is freed from sin and attains Baikunthpuri. It is written at the Niladri Mahotsav: “Och paraya bhaktya tosayetparameshwaram. Abhishekots’s Bai Pashyanti Bhuvimanabha. The omnipotent bhaktva sharmakhilam param. On this occasion, the devotees are adorned with gold ornaments on the temple’s jeweled throne.
