The first day of the month of Poush is celebrated as Sagittarius. It usually falls on December 14 or 15. From this day onwards, the first bhoga of Shri Gannath begins at the Puri Sree Mandir and lasts until the Uttarayana Sankranti or Makar Sankranti (usually on January 14). Anointing is performed due to the sanctity of the month of Poush. Describing the nature of this Sankranti, the registrar says that the name of this Sankranti is Mahodari.
