Chaitra Purnima (also known as Chaitipunei and Chait Punei) is a popular festival in Odisha. It is celebrated by the Keut people on the full moon day of the month of Chaitra (between March and April). The coyotes pretend to ride a horse and get into it. This is known as the Chaitighoda dance. The “Chaiti festival” is celebrated for the first eight days of the full moon. Indigenous people feast, dance, and hunt throughout the day and night. The head of the house pays homage to the ancestors on this day. Each member of the family wears a new outfit. Animal sacrifices are also practiced in some communities on this day. The first ripe mangoes of the year are eaten on this day. Bar dances and “Chaitighoda dances” are held in the coastal areas of Odisha. It is celebrated by both indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.
