Konark Sun Temple is a 13th-century Sun Temple (also known as the Black Pagoda), at Konark, in Odisha, India. It is believed that the temple was built by king Narasimhadeva I of Eastern Ganga Dynasty around AD 1250.

The temple is in the shape of a gigantic chariot with elaborately carved stone wheels, pillars and walls. A major part of the structure is now in ruins. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Konark Temple is the most exciting Tourist Attraction in Odisha.

The term “Konark” has been derived from ‘Kona’ + ‘Arka’ that means ‘Corner’ and ‘Sun’

It is said that the temple was not completed as originally planned because the foundation was not strong enough to bear the weight of the heavy dome.

Some people believe that the temple was built completely but there was a huge magnet in the peak that caused ships to wreck near the Seashore. That is why the dome was removed.

The Konark Sun Temple was declared a Workd Heritage site by UNESCO in 1984.
