The first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, had laid the foundation stone of the city on April 13 in 1948.
2. The city has a history of over 3,000 years starting with the Mahamegha-bahana Chedi dynasty (around the 2nd century BCE) which had its capital at Sisupalgarh
3. German town- planning engineer Otto Kolenigs Berger had prepared the master plan of the city.
4. Bhubaneswar replaced Cuttack as the capital in the year 1948, the year after India gained its independence from British.
5. Bubaneswar is on track to be the education hub of India with several high profile educational institutions already in the city such as IIT, IOMA, NIFT, CIFA, and a few on the track.
6. The World Bank in it’s 2009 Doing Business – Subnational reports for India ranks Bhubaneswar at number 3 in terms of ease of doing business.
7. A world class convention and trade center is being constructed by Populous at Bhubaneswar. The trade center will house the already operational World Trade Center, the fifth such center in India.
8. Nandankanan Zoological Park at Bhubaneswar is a 400-hectare (990-acre) zoo and botanical garden in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Established in 1960, it was opened to the public in 1979 and became the first zoo in India to join World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) in 2009. It also contains a botanical garden and part of it has been declared a sanctuary. Nandankanan, literally meaning The Garden of Heavens.
9. Nandankanan at Bhubaneswar is also famous for its white tiger population, a species it claims to have produced. In 1980, the first litter of white tigers were born to Deepak and Ganga — both normal tawny tigers. Subsequent litters of white tigers have been distributed to zoos both in India and internationally. Nandankanan is home to over 34 white tigers.
10. Bhubaneswar is supposed to have had over one thousand temples; earning the tag of the Temple City of India. Temples made in the Kalinga architectural style with a pine spire that curves up to a point over the sanctum housing the presiding deity and a pyramid-covered hall where people sit and pray.
