Parrots, also known as psittacines, are birds of the order Psittaciformes, which includes approximately 398 species in 92 genera and is found primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. The order is further subdivided into three superfamilies: Psittacoidea (“true” parrots), Cacatuoidea (cockatoos), and Strigopoidea. One-third of all parrot species are endangered, with a higher overall extinction risk than any other comparable bird group. Parrots have a pantropical distribution, with several species also living in temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere. South America and Australasia have the greatest variety of parrots.
