Sunabeda-Debrigarh wildlife sanctuaries as eco-sensitive zones

The Centre has approved the state government’s proposal to declare Sunabeda-Debrigarh wildlife sanctuaries as eco-sensitive zones (ESZ).

Centre will soon come up with a notification in this regard. Once declared an eco-sensitive zones, demarcated areas beyond the sanctuary boundary will be regulated.

928.94sq km has been declared as ESZ in Sunabeda. While a stretch of 2.5 km from the boundary towards the north of the sanctuary comes under the ESZ zone, towards the south it is 20km from the boundary.

Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, an important site for in-situ conservation of wildlife, over 40 species of mammals, 234 species of birds, 41 species of reptiles, 12 species of amphibians, 42 species of fishes, 39 species of odonates, 85 species of butterflies and 38 species of spiders.
