Odisha likely to get more hot days this summer Recent Odisha News

More hot days are likely to be experienced in the upcoming summer season if past experience is anything to go by.

During the past decade-and-a-half, Odisha has seen quite a good number of hot days in the year that followed El Nino year.

The year 1997 was a strong El Nino year, the next year – 1998 – produced one of the hottest summer seasons. In Odisha, more than 2,000 people died of heat stroke in that year. There were 23 heat-wave days recorded then.

Similarly, 2009 was a moderate El Nino year. In summer of 2010, people had a very tough time to deal with the heat-wave. Forty-one days of heat-wave made life miserable.

“Generally, we find years following El Nino year come with increased number of heat-wave days. Since 2015 was very strong El Nino year, this summer season is expected to have comparatively higher number of heat-wave days,” said S. C. Sahu, Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, here on Monday.

However, in November 2015, the mean temperature was 26.06 degree Celsius. In December from 1951 to 1980, the mean temperature was 21.65 degree Celsius which went up to 22.15 in December in same period. But 2015 December, it sharply rose to 23.85 degree Celsius.
